Ich mag die Anfänge eines jeden Jahres. Sie schimmern doch meistens in einem ganz besonderen Licht. Vielleicht kann man es Hoffnungsschimmer nennen. 

Das mag in den jetzigen Zeiten naiv klingen, und doch halte ich daran fest und fordere uns alle auf, nach Antworten zu suchen auf die Herausforderungen, deren Urheber wir sind. 

Wir sollten uns einlassen auf unsere Umgebung mit all ihren Schwierigkeiten. Indem wir im Hier und Jetzt sind und doch gleichzeitig durchlässig bleiben für Ungewöhnliches, Neues, ohne uns im Großen und Ganzen zu verlieren. Ein Versuch ist es wert.

Hier möchte ich hinweisen auf die arabisch-jüdische Schulinitiative Hand in Hand, die ganz konkret aus ihrer Überzeugung heraus etwas Besonderes geschaffen hat. Es ist gelungen, weil genügend Menschen daran geglaubt haben und aktiv geworden sind. Erzähler:innen ohne Grenzen hat dieses Projekt mit den Spenden aus der Filmvorführung von My So-Called Enemy unterstützt.

Lest in dem Buch To be Heard: Women's Voices across Land and Sea, hrsg. von Adele M.E. Jones! Ein außerordentliches Buch mit außerordentlichen Artikeln von Frauen und ihren Initiativen, die die Welt im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes bewegen. Darunter befindet sich auch ein Artikel von unserem Mitglied Maria Serrano und unserer Gründerin Micaela Sauber. 

Erzähler:innen ohne Grenzen e.V. bekam auch im letzten Jahr Rückenwind von dem wir auch in diesem Jahr getragen werden. Wir sind dankbar, dass wir unsere Arbeit gut und gewissenhaft weiterführen konnten und können, begleitet von einer großen Wertschätzung.

I like the beginnings of every year. They usually shimmer in a very special light. Perhaps you could call it a glimmer of hope. 

That may sound naive in these times, but I hold on to it and urge us all to look for answers to the challenges that we are the originators of. 

We should engage with our environment and all its difficulties. By being in the here and now and yet remaining permeable to the unusual and new without losing ourselves in the big picture. It's worth a try.

I would like to mention the Arab-Jewish school initiative Hand in Hand, which has created something very special based on its convictions. It succeeded because enough people believed in it and took action. Erzähler:innen ohne Grenzen supported this project with donations from the film screening of My So-Called Enemy.

Read the book To be Heard: Women's Voices across Land and Sea, edited by Adele M.E. Jones! An extraordinary book with extraordinary articles by women and their initiatives that are literally moving the world. Among them is an article by our member Maria Serrano and our founder Micaela Sauber. 

Erzähler:innen ohne Grenzen e.V. also received a tailwind last year, which will continue to support us this year. We are grateful that we were able to continue our work well and conscientiously, accompanied by great appreciation.

Wir sind sehr glücklich, dass wir im Jahr 2024 ähnlich viele Menschen erreichen konnten wie schon 2023. Auch im Jahr 2024 haben wir ungefähr 1600 Menschen, vor allem Kinder, durch verschiedene Projekte und Angebote erreicht: 

Erzählen bildet Sprache, Internationales Erzähkarussell, Worte mit Flügeln, Filmvorführung My So-Called Enemy und Diskussion zum Thema Israeel-Palästina-Konflikt, Fortbildungen: Geschichtenerzählen und Friedensbildung, Erzählen für Lehrer:innen und Erzieher:innen, Erzählen für Demenzkranke, Erzählen für Kinder im Hospiz. Außerdem gibt es bestimmt noch einige, die ganz still und leise ihre Arbeit geleistet haben, von denen wir nichts wissen.

Wir hatten auch im Jahr 2024 viele Fürsprecher und konnten u.a. durch Spenden das eine oder andere Projekt finanziell unterstützen.

We are very happy to announce that we could reach around about the same amount of people as we did in the the year 2023. We reached again around 1600 people, mainly children, through various projects and events: 

Storytelling Builds Language, International Storytelling Carousel, Words with Wings, film screening My So-Called Enemy and discussion on the topic of the Israel-Palestine conflict, training courses: Storytelling and Peace Building, Storytelling for Teachers and Educators, storytelling for dementia patients, storytelling for children in hospices. And there are certainly a few more who have quietly done their work that we don't know about.

We also had many advocates in 2024 and were able to support one or two projects financially through donations, among other things.

Das Dialogformat bietet eine Plattform zu inspirierendem Austausch und Vernetzung für Erzählprojekte, die Frieden, Diversität, Integration, ein friedliches Zusammenleben oder ähnliches fördern.

Das Pro-Action-Café schafft einen interaktiven Raum, in dem Projekte vorgestellt, wertvolle Impulse geteilt und gemeinsam neue Perspektiven und Lösungsansätze entwickelt werden können. Konkret kann immer ein Viertel der Teilnehmenden eigene Ideen oder Projekte einbringen und die anderen Teilnehmenden unterstützen mit Erfahrung, Kreativität und Reflexion die Projektideen. Auch wer keine eigene Projektidee einbringt kann im Austausch jede Menge lernen, die Projektideen der anderen näher kennenlernen und Inspiration für eine eigene neue Ideen bekommen.

So können Visionen konkretisiert, Herausforderungen gemeinsam angegangen und neue Verbindungen geknüpft werden.

Moderiert wird die Veranstaltung von Silvia Angel.
Sie lernte die Kraft des Erzählens bei einem Friedensprojekt 2011 in Israel kennen. Davon begeistert absolvierte sie die Ausbildung zur Erzählerin an der International School of Storytelling in England. Seitdem erzählt sie auf großen und kleinen Bühnen Geschichten, die zu gesellschaftlicher Veränderung anregen. Sie ist Mitglied bei Erzähler ohne Grenzen e.V. und hat 2024 ihren Master in Friedensbildung an der University for Peace in Costa Rica erworben. Ihre Webseite: www.impulsgeschichten.de

Du erzählst oder willst in einer sozialen Einrichtung wie Hospiz, Altenheim, Geflüchteten Unterkunft, Kinderkrankenhaus o.ä. erzählen? Oder du kennst jemanden, der hospitieren möchte, oder du möchtest bei jemandem hospitieren? Dann schick uns gerne dein Vorhaben.

3 Erzähler:innen erhalten von uns 300 Euro. 

Welche Bedingungen gibt es?

- Du musst entweder Mitglied sein oder Teil des Netzwerks. 

- Das Erzählen muss im Jahr 2025 stattfinden.

- Im Anschluss an deine Veranstaltung(en) erhalten wir einen kurzen Bericht von dir, der ca. eine halbe Seite, nicht mehr als eine Seite lang ist.

- Das Geld bekommst du am Tag des Einsatzes und mit Erhalt des Berichts. 

- Schick uns eine pdf mit einem kurzen Text warum und wo du erzählen möchtest.

Wir werden uns bei der Auswahl bemühen, die diversen Menschengruppen zu berücksichtigen. Wenn es sehr viele Bewerbungen sind, die auf das Profil passen, wird das Los entscheiden.

Do you work or would like to work in social institutions such as hospice, retirement home, refugee shelter, children's hospital or similar? Or you know someone who would like to sit in, or you would like to learn from someone? Then contact us with your idea.

3 storytellers will receive 300 Euros from us. 

What are the conditions?

- You must either be a member or part of the network. 

- The storytelling must take place in 2025.

- After your event(s), we will receive a short report of about half a page, no more than one page from you.

- You will receive the money on the day of the storytelling and the receipt of the report. 

- Send us a pdf with a short text about why and where you want to tell your story.

We will do our best to consider the various groups of people in the selection process. If there are a lot of applications that fit the profile, we will draw lots.

Damaszener Rosen

Durch unseren Austausch mit den Notfallpädagogen e.V. haben wir die Möglichkeit, Sozialpädagog:innen, die mit Heimkindern in Damaskus arbeiten, zu unterstützen. Die Sozialarbeiter:innen vor Ort sind ausgelaugt und haben momentan wenig Kapazitäten, selbst kreativ zu sein. Sie sind sehr dankbar für Ideen und nehmen gern die unentgeltlichen Fortbildungsangebote der Notfallpädagogen an. 

Mohammed Kelo, Britta Wilmsmeier und Mohammed Kelo und Suse Weisse werden zwei Online Fortbildungen im Februar geben.

Through our exchange with Notfallpädagogen e.V., we have the opportunity to support social workers who work with children in Damascus. The local social workers are exhausted and currently have little capacity to be creative themselves and are very grateful for ideas and are happy to accept the free training offered by the emergency educators. 

Mohammed Kelo, Britta Wilmsmeier and Mohammed Kelo and Suse Weisse will give two online training courses in February. 

Wir freuen uns, dass Projekte und Kooperationen auch in diesem Jahr fortgeführt werden können: Weiterhin werden wir erzählen für Kitakinder in dem Projekt Worte mit Flügeln, für Schüler:innen mit erhöhtem Sprachförderbedarf in dem Projekt Erzählen bildet Sprache. Für internationale Familien und Familien mit Interessen an Sprachen wird erzählt im Internationalen Erzählkarussell.

Wir führen unsere Kooperation mit den Notfallpädagogen fort und unterstützen ihre Arbeit im Ausland. Wir freuen uns über die anhaltende Partnerschaft mit zusa - art of collaboration und sind gern weiterhin Gastgeber:innen und Pat:innen für Kreative und Künstler:innen aus dem Ausland. 

Wir freuen uns, dass wir unseren Rückenwind durch eine Ausschreibung an unsere Mitglieder und Netzwerk weitergeben und ihre Arbeit in sozialen Einrichtungen unterstützen können.

We are delighted that projects and collaborations can continue this year: We will continue to tell stories for daycare children in the Words with Wings project and for pupils with increased language support needs in the Storytelling Builds Language project. For international families and families with an interest in languages, stories will be told in the International Storytelling Carousel.

We are continuing our cooperation with the emergency educators and support their work abroad. We are delighted about our ongoing partnership with zusa - art of collaboration and are happy to continue hosting and sponsoring creative people and artists from abroad. 

We are pleased that we can pass on our tailwind to our members and network through a call for proposals and that we can support their work in social institutions. 

In diesem außerordentlichen Buch, herausgegeben von Dr. Adele M. E. Jones, erzählen Frauen von Ozeanien bis Europa über ihre Arbeit, mit der sie Erzählungen schaffen, für und über Menschen, die bisher ungehört blieben. Sie haben ein Ohr und finden Worte für die komplexen Herausforderungen in denen sich die Menschen befinden und werden damit politisch aktiv. 

Natürlich möchten wir an dieser Stelle erwähnen, dass u.a. unser Mitglied Maria Serrano und unsere Gründerin Micaela Sauber einen Artikel für diese Sammlung geschrieben haben. Jasna Held aus Dubrovnik war seit dem Beginn der Arbeit von Erzähler ohne Grenzen /Tellers without Borders Mitglied unseres Netzwerkes. Sie reiste als Erzählerin mit unserer Finanzierung und Organisation vielmals durch das  vom Krieg erschütterte, ethnisch aufgeteilte und geschwächte Bosnien-Herzegowina. Die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Micaela Sauber und Jasna und ihre gemeinsamen Erfahrungen gaben Inspiration und Anstoß zur Gründung von Erzähler ohne Grenzen. Jasna nahm an mehreren von uns organisierten internationalen Konferenzen in Hamburg und in Forest Row zu Fragen des erzählerischen Umgangs mit Märchen für traumatisierten Menschen teil. 2024 wurde sie in Kroatien durch eine theaterpädagogische Organisation für ihr Werk geehrt.

Jasna Held from Dubrovnik has been a member of our network since the beginning of the work of Tellers without Borders. She travelled as a storyteller with our funding and organisation many times through war-torn, ethnically divided and weakened Bosnia-Herzegovina. The collaboration between Micaela Sauber and Jasna and their shared experiences provided the inspiration and impetus for the founding of Storytellers Without Borders. Jasna took part in several international conferences we organised in Hamburg and Forest Row on issues of storytelling for traumatised people. In 2024 she was honoured for her work by a theatre pedagogical organisation in Croatia.

Jasna Held, a storyteller and puppeteer from Dubrovnik, has left an indelible mark on the field of drama education in Croatia and beyond through her long-standing work. Since 1994, Jasna has consistently promoted the art of storytelling, enriching the methodology of drama education and fostering the creative development of children and adults. As a founding member of the Cultural Society ASTER and performing across Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and other countries, Jasna laid the foundations for modern fairy-tale storytelling in the region.

Her performances at prestigious international festivals have solidified her position as one of Europe’s leading storytellers, proving the relevance of traditional fairy tales in contemporary contexts. Storytelling as an artistic discipline in Croatia is now stronger and more developed than ever, thanks in large part to Jasna Held. Her performances and educational efforts have not only inspired new generations of storytellers but have also created a platform for the growth and evolution of this ancient art form in modern times.

As a member of the Croatian Center for Drama Education since 2007, Jasna has educated numerous educators, teachers, and professors on the art of storytelling. In collaboration with the HCDO and the Croatian Education and Teacher Training Agency, she has conducted numerous seminars in Zagreb, Požega, Pula, and Dubrovnik, promoting storytelling as a tool for fostering imagination, empathy, and communication skills.

Her participation in festivals such as the International Children’s Festival in Šibenik, the Ogulin Fairy Tale Festival, and LegendFest demonstrates her dedication to promoting cultural heritage among children and youth. Additionally, through regular performances in libraries, schools, kindergartens, and cultural centers across Croatia, Jasna ensures that art is accessible to all age groups and social groups.

Her many years of activities across Europe have placed her at the pinnacle of European storytelling, as evidenced by recommendations from a renowned storytelling theater in the United Kingdom. With her dedicated work, Jasna Held not only enriches drama education in Croatia but also builds bridges between different cultures and generations, making fairy tales a living part of everyday life.

Her commitment, vision, and work have enabled storytelling in Croatia to flourish, gaining recognition across Europe. For all these reasons, we believe that Jasna Held deserves the Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Development and Popularization of Storytelling as an Artistic and Pedagogical Discipline, as well as for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage through the revival of traditional fairy tales and stories.

In diesem Jahr findet ein ganz besonderes Erzähler:innentreffen statt! Denn es haben sich drei deutschsprachige Vereine, die sich intensiv mit dem Erzählen von Geschichten und Märchen auseinandersetzen, zusammengetan, um zusammen ein Treffen zu veranstalten:

Der Internationaler Jahreskongress der Europäischen Märchengesellschaft e.V. unterstützt von der Schweizerischen Märchengesellschaft (SMG) und dem Verband der Erzählerinnen und Erzähler e.V. (VEE) sind zu Gast bei den Internationalen Tagen des Erzählens in Bad Kreuznach.

Kommt zahlreich, es wird ein Fest. Natürlich sind wir auch dort. Deswegen leider nicht bei FEST in Rom, das bestimmt auch sehr schön wird.

A very special storytellers' meeting is taking place this year! Three German-speaking associations that are intensively involved in storytelling and fairy tales have come together to organize a meeting:

The Internationaler Jahreskongress der Europäischen Märchengesellschaft e.V. supported by the Schweizerische Märchengesellschaft (SMG) and the Verband der Erzählerinnen und Erzähler e.V. (VEE) are guests at the International Days of Storytelling in Bad Kreuznach.

Come in large numbers, it will be a party. Of course we are there too. We will therefore not make it to FEST in Rome this year, which will be great too.

Retreat for storytellers: Body - Mind - Voice

This year we will be visiting Leipzig and are delighted that Erzählraum has agreed to be our local cooperation partner. 

More details about the program will be announced before the summer vacations. 

As always, the training, will be free for our members and half price for our network. All others pay the full price.

Wie in letzter Zeit öfter sichtbar, hatten einige Aussagen von Politikern oder Medien propagandistische Züge. Aber was hat Propaganda mit der Kunstform des Geschichtenerzählens zu tun? 

Durch die systematische Verwendung von Storytelling kann der positive Grundgedanke dieser Kunstform auf den Kopf gestellt und zu Propaganda werden. Zentrovertierter Unsinn bringt Menschen in Versuchung, und sie geraten so unter die Räder von manipulativer Propaganda. Doch wie funktioniert Propaganda und was verbirgt sich dahinter und wo liegen die Parallelen zum Geschichtenerzählen?

Wenn man das Geschichtenerzählen und die Propaganda im Ganzen betrachtet, kann man einige Gemeinsamkeiten in beiden Feldern wiederfinden.

Beide nutzen Narrative, um Menschen eine Botschaft zu überbringen. Sie arbeiten mit klaren Strukturen, lebendigen Bildern und wiederkehrenden Motiven, um Aufmerksamkeit, aber auch das Nicht-Vergessen des Inhaltes zu bewirken. Diese Emotionalität wird also gezielt verwendet, um oft komplexere Themen einfacher darzustellen. Das Einbinden von Helden- oder Feindfiguren stärkt die Ergriffenheit des Publikums und lässt sie so leidenschaftlich an der Geschichte teilhaben. Bei beiden spielt Emotionalität eine Rolle, welche das Ganze erst zum Leben erweckt und einen authentischen Charakter einhaucht.

Während Propaganda jedoch die Absicht verfolgt, gezielt Meinungen oder Verhaltensweisen zu steuern, um so manipulativ Fakten zu verzerren und einseitig darzustellen, wobei strikte ideologische Darstellungen auf die Opfer projizierte werden, dient Storytelling hingegen der Unterhaltung, Inspiration und Reflexion, regt zum Nachdenken an und bietet Raum für eine eigene und persönliche Interpretation und unterschiedliche Sichtweisen.

Die entscheidende Differenz liegt also darin, dass das Geschichtenerzählen das Verständnis und die Kreativität fördert, während Propaganda genau das Gegenteil tut - Intoleranz und Neid.

Der Unterschied ist klar und deutlich, und doch sollten die Ähnlichkeit nicht unterschätzt werden und das Geschichtenerzählen missbraucht werden. Im Zeitalter der Propaganda ist es daher umso wichtiger, weise mit der Sprache umzugehen und sich der Macht und Auswirkung der gesprochenen Worte bewusst zu bleiben und in keinster Form zu missbrauchen.

As has often been the case recently, some statements made by politicians or the media have had propagandistic overtones. But what does propaganda have to do with the art form of storytelling? 

The systematic use of storytelling can turn the positive basic idea of this art form on its head and turn it into propaganda. Centroverted nonsense tempts people and they fall under the wheels of manipulative propaganda. But how does propaganda work and what is behind it and where are the parallels to storytelling?

If you look at storytelling and propaganda as a whole, you can find some similarities in both fields.

Both use narratives to convey a message to people. They work with clear structures, vivid images and recurring motifs to attract attention, but also to ensure that the content is not forgotten. This emotionality is therefore used in a targeted way to present often complex topics in a simpler way. The inclusion of heroic or enemy figures strengthens the audience's emotion and allows them to participate passionately in the story. Emotionality plays a role in both, bringing the whole thing to life and giving it an authentic character.

However, while propaganda is intended to specifically steer opinions or behaviour in order to manipulatively distort facts and present them in a one-sided way, projecting strict ideological representations onto the victims, storytelling, on the other hand, serves to entertain, inspire and reflect, encourages reflection and offers space for individual and personal interpretation and different points of view.

The key difference, then, is that storytelling promotes understanding and creativity, while propaganda does exactly the opposite - intolerance and envy.

The difference is clear and obvious, and yet the similarity should not be underestimated and storytelling misused. In the age of propaganda, it is therefore all the more important to use language wisely and to remain aware of the power and impact of spoken words and not to misuse them in any way.
